Today I met “Fiona” (name withheld) a teenage mother 16 years old with her mum. Both came to the health center to treat malaria for their children. Fiona’s baby is older than her sibling. She feels shy talking about being a mother at quite a young age.

She is intelligent and passionate about going back to school. Her mum says had she known how to counsel her about starting contraception at 12 years, she would have at least continued with her education without getting pregnant so early.

It’s been touching having an open conversation about starting contraception. She feared that her peers informed her that contraception makes women sick and Burren in the later years.

Today Fiona’s learned about starting contraception and opted for DMPA for the start, she hopes to come back and take on a Longer-acting method. However, she needs someone close to her community to continue following her up and support her to deal with the fears and myths. Hopefully, she finds support to go back to school. At least she’s started on contraception. Our CHW will continue to encourage her to look after her baby well and see that she doesn’t get another one so quickly.
